In the past, many marriages were arranged by the elders.
Sometimes parents or vuvu would introduce potential partners, and the elders would discuss whether the two were a good match.
If both families agreed, the wedding preparations would begin — discussing what the betrothal gifts should be, how many, and considering each side's status and family background. The elders' opinions mattered greatly; they could even decide whether the marriage could happen at all.
Today it's different. Many people meet and fall in love on their own and then decide whether to marry. The elders rarely arrange these things anymore.
I think the old way valued the opinions of family and the tribe; today is freer — each person can choose the one they love.
